Leading with EQ:
Self Awareness
Overview:
Product: On demand portrait mobile microlearning course.
Client: This concept course was designed for a set of mobile learning courses for corporate leadership training.
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, Graphic Design.
Tools Used: Articulate Rise, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, Amazon Web Services.
Problem and Solution:
Problem: New managers at a rapidly growing energy non-profit had little training in developing their leadership skills. The company requested courses in emotional intelligence (starting with self-awareness) that could be viewed asynchronously in small chunks.
Solution: As the learner was not always at their desk and learning needed to fit in small increments, a microlearning designed for mobile viewing was chosen.
My Process:
I used principles from the Successive Approximative Model (SAM) and rapid e-Learning Instructional Design Models to create this microlearning. These approaches were chosen along with Articulate Rise for their speed, flexibility and device responsiveness. Emotional Intelligence is a complicated topic, so I spent a lot of time iterating and incorporating feedback to form a logical framework that learners could follow for all their emotions. Once I had identified the four essential components of self- awareness (distinguish, identify, analyze and connect), I mapped out the current session on anger. In this session, I utilized concepts from Andragogy and Constructivism to incorporate the learner’s previous understanding and scaffold the learning content to maximize engagement and curiosity. I also included a guided walk-through of the steps in a scenario-based format instead of a traditional summary at the end to re-enforce the concepts.
Project Challenges:
1) Integrating custom graphics. I was recently inspired by the work of Emma Berry and Belvista Studio who have tutorials and example Rise courses with beautiful and engaging custom graphics. I spent time researching to find the exact specifications and format to incorporate these types of graphics from Adobe Illustrator.
2) Formatting for a portrait mobile experience. There was a lot of trial and error and a few questions to the Articulate help desk and the experts at ELearning Hero’s to find the right dimensions for the Storyline blocks along with some unique errors that arose in the slider interaction. With the communities help, we were able to solve each error.
Overall, this project was fun and I learned a lot of new graphic design skills.
